Lima, the capital of Peru, is situated on the west coast of the southern Pacific Ocean, along the outlet of the Rímac River. Lima is full of fascinating contrasts between traditional and modern influences. The traditional influences evolved from Peru's history as the home of the Inca and numerous other civilized cultures dating back as far as 2000 BC. Indigenous cultural traditions and languages still thrive today in Peru.
While Lima's past gives the city its unique color, it has moved with the pace of modernity and now boasts strong industries and contemporary technologies. Lima is known for its interesting museums, colonial churches, vibrant cafe scene, striking architecture and genuinely friendly people. In addition, it is the hub of transport to Peru's endless natural treasures and archeological gems. South of the Capital, long white beaches stretch along the Pacific Ocean backed by white sand dunes. Public Clinic
Shadow doctors and nurses as they perform medical procedures and conduct consultations with patients. Learn medical Spanish terminology and assist in various areas of the clinic. Peru has some of the most prestigious medical schools in Latin America, and you will gain valuable experience working alongside these health professionals.
Elementary School
Assist with English classes; facilitate arts and crafts activities as well as physical education classes. Organize after-school activities and field trips for the children, provide support, and act as a mentor
Non-Profit Organization
Work with mothers and children, presenting on topics such as nutrition, health education, and first aid. Volunteers also assist with the headquarters' fundraising campaign and translate funding letters from Spanish to English to help request outside donations. Business-minded volunteers may also help out in the micro-enterprise division, which teaches women entrepreneurial skills and training on successfully running small businesses.
Urban Development
Participate in long-term projects, from the design of a project proposal through the implementation stage. Examples include encouraging teenagers to build structurally sound (seismic) walls and guiding construction of a community center.
Conservation
Develop and improve recycling programs and help construct water purification systems. Volunteers also assist in educating community members about respect for natural resources and care for the environment, so that families and community members can learn to develop these practices.
Labor Laws and Human Rights
Promote international awareness of the workers' reality through emails, letters, and translation of advocacy materials. Assist with research or a documentary about the workers' lives. Help organize the donation of clothes, school materials, and educational information. Participate in recreational activities with the domestic workers and their children.
